Westland Place Studios

Susan Austin

Since the Summer of 2022 I've largely been making drawings. My work references landscape, starting with drawing along the Stour Estuary. Looking is important to me, as it is that these initial sketches carry back to the studio something of my experience of observing the world outside. I then experiment with markmaking: teasing, tugging, dribbling. I think of the lines as untethered pieces of string or thread.

The resulting drawings are often uncertain of their boundaries, of where their edges end and the wall begins. This makes for all sorts of questions about how best to show these drawings.
